Debian 8 Post Installation Tasks

Domain name: example.com     Realm name: EXAMPLE.COM

Workgroup: EXAMPLE     Server IP address: xx.xx.xx.xx

Server name: linuxsvr01     Client name: linuxclnt01

Root password: ?Pa55w0rd!

Allow root login with puTTY by uncommenting line 28

# vi /etc/ssh/sshd_config
    27 #LoginGraceTime 120
    28 PermitRootLogin yes
    29 #StrictModes yes

# systemctl restart ssh

Before we can update or install it is necessary to change the sources file by commenting out line 5

# vi /etc/apt/sources.list
    5 # deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 8.6.0 _Jessie_ - Official amd64 DVD Binary-1 20160917-14:25]/ jessie contrib main

We can now get the update list from the debian mirrors

# aptitude update

And update the system with the upgrade command

# aptitude upgrade

As there are no roles installed no updates were installed

The vi editor package needs to be upgraded to vi improved (vim)

# aptitude install vim -y

We can now check that the machine is in the hosts file and if not add it

# vi /etc/hosts
    127.0.0.1 localhost
    xx.xx.xx.xx linuxsvr02.example.com linuxsvr02

These are the minimum tasks that should allow us to continue the installation of the various roles we wish to employ. It is also a good moment to add your static address to your DNS Server before joining your Active Directory domain.
